Delegation

Learn. Grow. Lead.

Are you good at delegating?  Last week, I hosted a zoom call with two team members that were unable to attend an onsite  leadership development program we hosted for their company, so I offered a debrief of the session.

Each person shared the importance of improving their delegation skills as a leader.

Here are three things that ruin delegation:

1. Buying it Back

This happens when you take back the assignment, maybe because you think they won’t do it as well as you, or they may not be ready to handle it or you want it done more quickly.

2. Abandonment

The state when you give the task and then don’t give instruction or follow through to see if they understand.

3. Drowning

The time when you suffocate people by hovering and hammering too much instead of giving them autonomy to handle the task.

If you want to improve in your ability to delegate to others, follow these three strategies:

1. Educate

Give detailed instructions and the importance on the specific task or project.

2. Ask

Make sure you ask for clarification to make sure they understand what to do.

3. Follow Up

Check in periodically to see how they are doing and if they need support.

Delegation is crucial for effective leadership, team performance, and organizational success. It allows leaders to focus on strategic tasks, develop their team members, and improve overall efficiency. By delegating, leaders can foster trust, boost morale, and create a more engaged and productive work environment.

Have a wonderful, safe Happy 4th of July!

Blessings,

Merikay
